2018 Pennant Winners!!
What an end to the 2018 Men’s Pennant Season.
Sunday 6 May saw three Phillip Island Teams in the South Gippsland District Pennant Finals. We had Divisions 2 and 6 playing at Leongatha and Division 4 playing at Foster.
We had live scoring on Facebook for the Division 2 Matches throughout the day keeping our members updated on what was happening. The match was close all day, with most matches only having a hole or two difference. James Bain took a fast lead winning his first few holes to be 4 up after 5. Barry and Paul had slow starts, but fought back strongly through the middle of the round. Matt came up against a tough opponent, but continued to fight until the end. The top order of Mark and Issac were in front for most of the day and took wins towards the end.
However, the star of the day was our Number 4 Lucas Piera. With the match tied at 3 games each, Lucas was heading down the 19th with the final resting on his shoulders against Mark Carruthers from Woorayl. Mark hit his drive down the middle of the fairway, while Lucas went long and left into the rough. Mark had the first shot into the green over the front bunker, and landed it perfectly a few feet short of the pin. Lucas hit what appeared to be the shot of the day, getting through the trees and up onto the green, further away than Mark and giving Lucas the first putt. Having the first putt can make all the difference in match play and it certainly did for Lucas. With both teams, caddies and many spectators surrounding the green, Lucas sized up the putt and struck it perfectly as we all watched it roll straight into the hole for birdie on the first playoff hole!! Suddenly Mark’s birdie putt seemed to be double the length than it was to start with. Mark stood over his putt and while we all held out breath, it pulled up short and left of the hole, leaving Lucas with the birdie win and Phillip Island with the Division 2 Pennant Win.
Division 6 were also playing at Leongatha against Woorayl and came home with a terrific 6/1 win. Over at Foster, PIGC just missed out on going three for three, falling to Leongatha 6/1, however the individual games were much closer than what the final score shows.
It was another terrific season and thanks goes out to those who played, caddied, organisers behind the scenes, and cheered us on from the sidelines. We are already looking forward to a strong 2019 Season.
